Motorcycle Safety Foundation to teach California motorcycle safety again!

August 21st, 2009

msf-logoOnce again, the California Highway Patrol has contracted with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) to teach motorcycle safety classes to California’s wouldbe riders as part of California’s Motorcyclist Safety Program. This is the third consecutive signing and gives rise to the importance and success of the program.

I’ve taken the basic class and my wife has too. And I highly recomend it for anyone who rides or wants to ride. If you read my post Handling an unexpected slide you’ll see one very good example of the success of these classes.

The MSF offers a basic riders course and advanced training as well. I highly recomend them and hope you will too.

Decline in bike casualties

August 11th, 2009

As reported by Motorcycle News, casualties and serious injury motorcycle accidents for the year ending in March are down 11% from the previous twelve month period. In ths reporting period there were 5,910 serious/fatal crashes compared to 6,638 in the previous twelve months.

So this begs the question; are we riding safer? Are fewer accidents actually getting reported? To what do we atribute the declline? I don’t mean to be a pessimist but I have to believe that SOMETHING has had some causative effect on this. Your thoughts are welcome.

Dignity Memorial Viet Nam Wall visiting Westlake Village

August 10th, 2009

An 18-wheeler that carries the Dignity Wall, which is a scaled down replica of the Viet Nam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington DC, will be in Southern California and traveling to Westlake Village. Members of the Patriot Guard and American Legion Riders, the Southern Cruisers Riding CLub and others from all over California will be escorting the big-rig as it rolls into and through Bakersfield on its way to Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village. The wall will be on display there from September 4th through the 7th.

While this post is not intended to be any statement either for or against war, I personally would like to openly salute all of our brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who give themselves for the freedoms I enjoy so much. If you ride, or if you don’t you are encouraged to visit the memorial.

Harley Davidson announces the new XR1200X for 2010

August 4th, 2009

Only a year after the introduction of Harley Davidson’s Euro-style XR1200 the company announced a redesign for 2010. The new XR1200X will sport a blacked-out engine casing, upside-down forks, and a matt black tail, tank and mudguards along with a higher spec Showa suspension.

Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Vice President said, “This new-product roll-out is simply an expression of our enthusiasm for motorcycling. Like everyone, we are working and living in a challenging environment these days, but our passion for creating and riding great bikes is still at full throttle.”

It seems to me that Harley Davidson is making a concentrated play for the street tough performance machine market. Since I’ve always been a big fan of Harley Davidson, my view may be biased, but I have a feeling this is going to be a very well received bike. And I hate to say it (and will likely catch a lot of hell) after their V-Rod, they will need something like this XR1200X to redeem themselves. But that’s just my opinion. I know there are plenty out there that just love the V-Rod. But I’m not one of them.

Hopefully we’ll see this machine at the next IMS show when it comes to town. And if so, I plan on taking a little test spin. So stay tuned…
